To move forward from an architectural feasibility
study for converting an existing Civic Center into a thriving arts
and recreational facility, the City of Dearborn worked with The
Sports Management Group as Program and Planning Consultants to be
sure the new Center met the needs of the community. The City's goal
was to restrict development to 30% renovation and 70% new construction.
The Sports Management Group took the Project Committee, composed
of staff from Parks and Recreation and other city departments, on
a field trip to see two recreation centers in action, and led the
Committee in creating goals for the new Center.
The Committee's ambitious "something for
everyone" tenet was developed into key design statements for
space components and programming. Versatility of spaces and compatibility
of programs are integral to the Center's success with features such
as the renovated Dome Room's ability to "swing" to accommodate
a conference, fitness activity, or special event and the provision
of physical and acoustical separation between theatrical arts areas
and physical activity areas. To be sure the exciting design and
programs would translate to a successful facility, The Sports Management
Group provided operating planning services and developed an operating
budget and fee structures for the new Center.
