At Highlands Ranch, a family-oriented community
south of Denver, a motivated group of homeowners pursued the challenge
of creating a new recreational center. The Sports Management Group,
serving as Programming and Design Consultants to the project, guided
the volunteer Future Facilities Committee through a series of hands-on
activities. These fun activities included "spending sprees"
in which homeowners chose how to spend play dollars to buy programming
and activity spaces for the new Center. They played with the site
plans, manipulating scaled building sections to more clearly visualize
the possibilities for construction.
The challenge included siting the building on
a difficult L-shaped 10-acre site and developing a facility that
would complement the existing recreation center at Northridge while
serving the needs of the entire community. The Sports Management
Group developed cost estimates and operating cost projections, prepared
information to support a public vote regarding funding, and served
as Sports Facility Design Consultant to the Architect of Record,
Sink Combs Dethlefs. The design features a skylit central rotunda/lobby
that provides access and views to all activity areas. The completed
Eastridge facility is an inviting recreational, educational, and
social gathering place for all residents.
