Faced with the tough challenge of building a
new fitness center at the hub of their large, well-developed urban
Campus, Wayne State University sought help from The Sports Management
Group. As Programming and Design Consultants to the project, The
Sports Management Group devised a student survey to assess needs
and preferences, tailoring the distribution to gain high visibility
and maximum student response. Focus groups provided additional avenues
for students to influence planning for the Center. With a goal to
increase the level of recreational opportunities on Campus, The
Sports Management Group looked for ways to augment existing offerings
on Campus, as well as present new ones, such as a new recreational
Natatorium serving needs not met by an existing lap pool and a linking
of services with a team-focused athletic facility located across
campus.
The Sports Management Group prepared a detailed
architectural program and working with the architects provided the
University with creative solutions for the new facility, despite
a limited footprint. Since opening in September 2000, the Fitness
Center, located across from the Student Union and Library, will
enhance the Campus and become a central gathering place for recreational
activities.
