When planning a University recreational facility,
garnering support is a crucial first step. As Design Architect for
the expansion and renovation of the Texas Tech Student Recreation
Center, The Sports Management Group worked from the project's inception
with Recreational Staff and students. In just seven weeks, The Sports
Management Group completed a detailed survey of student preferences,
then used that information to draft a space program, estimate costs,
establish a per semester fee, and publish a campaign brochure
resulting in an 82% favorable vote. With The Sports Management Group
as facilitators, the Staff and students worked together to further
identify goals and reach consensus on which components could be
built for the budget.
Teamwork has been the hallmark of this project
from the beginning. "The Sports Management Group was a big part
of our negotiations," commented Joe MacLean, Director of Recreational
Sports. "Every person on our staff of ten had agenda items that
each thought were important."
The Student Recreation Center, which opened
in 2001, features expanded space, improvements to the indoor 50
meter and 25 yard pools, and an array of activities to please the
crowd.
